De oorzaak blijft speculeren, onze bron in Italie spreekt over het instorten van een wand/plafond. De media in Italie heeft het over een silt out waardoor ze de uitgang niet meer vonden. wat de oorzaak ook is, het is verschrikkelijk.

UPDATE: Geen instorting, wel opdwarrelend stof, desoriëntatie, gevolgd door paniek. Duikers zijn verdronken. :-( The group of divers was accompagnied by two dive staff members: Douglas Rizzo (Leader) and Roberto Navarra (owner of the dive shop Pesciolino Sub). When they entered the grotto, the guides each took half of the group. The entrance to the cave is through a tunnel at a depth of 13 to 14 metres. The group should then have swum up to a higher tunnel and made their exit from the cave through that. "Beneath this channel there is another tunnel that leads to a dead end in a chamber with a sandy floor. The group accidentally entered this nearby tunnel which led to the chamber with a dead end. The group realised something was wrong when he saw their guide showing signs of agitation, but at that point it was too late. The agitation of the least experienced took hold. Mud and sand came up from the bottom of the cave and visibility was gone. The cave became a blind tunnel, nobody couldn't see anything. At that point it was panic. Navarra managed to get his group back to safety after the silt-out, delivered them to the dinghy, and went back down to try to find the others. He found only the body of one of the divers before he was too low on air to continue. At this point rescue procedures had already been put into place, and so because Navarra returned to the dinghy with the news of the first body, the initial news reports out of Salerno were that three divers were missing, one dead. Eventually professional PSD divers were able to recover all four bodies. Additional investigation of the cave structure seems to have ruled out a collapse and other details have discarded the hypothesis of poisoning by toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, which is prevalent in these caves. The medical examiner has ruled the cause of death of all four to be drowning, and autopsies will not be carried out.
